How to be an MHFA(S) Instructor?

1

Have all the pre-requisites before applying to MHFA(S) administrator

Pre-requisites

  • Have completed 2 days certified relevant MHFA(S) training
  • Helping professionals with mental health-related qualifications
  • For MHFA Adult, must have direct working experience with mental health clients for at least 2 years
  • For YMHFA, must have direct working experience with mental health clients for at least 2 years with at least one year of youth related experience that includes:
  • Direct youth work - counselling youths (& their families), running programs for youths e.g. group work, youth drop-in centre AND/OR
  • Voluntary basis - involved in mentoring program/s, befriending, experiential excursions
  • A testimonial of youth related experience to be submitted together with your application form
  • For MHFA OP, must have direct working experience with mental health clients for at least 2 years with at least one year of eldercare related experience that includes:
  • Direct eldercare work - counselling elders (& their families), running programs for elders e.g. group work, eldercare drop-in centre AND/OR
  • Voluntary basis - involved in mentoring program/s, befriending, experiential excursions
  • A testimonial of eldercare related experience  to be submitted together with your application form
  • Has large group interactive training experience
  • Tertiary education (Diploma and above)
  • Fulfill the competencies during the MHFA TTI training

  • Download Application Form (Click here for MHFA TTI application form) 
  • Fill in all the sections on the form
  • Email to MHFA Administrator (your application form, your full CV, PDF copies of your certification, your MHFA 2-days certificate) for MEC Master Trainer’s consideration

MHFA Administrator will check the authenticity of information submitted

Master Trainers will arrange telephone interview with candidate to decide if the candidate is successful in applying for the TTI course

MHFA Administrator will inform if your application is approved/not approved by MEC

  • Upon acceptance to course, candidate is to make course fee payment
  • Course fee will be advised by MHFA Administrator
  • Fees are due 3 weeks prior to the commencement of the TTI training course

 

Payment by Post (via cheque):

  • Ensure that your cheque is crossed and made payable to "CHANGI GENERAL HOSPITAL"
  • Write your name and contact number on the reverse side of your cheque and enclose with your application form.
  • If your cheque is for payment for more than one participant, please clearly state the name(s) of the participant(s).
  • Please do not send any postdated cheque for payment.
  • All cheque must be mailed to: Trauma Recovery & Corporate Solutions (TRaCS), Changi General Hospital, No 2 Simei Street 3, Singapore 529889

Cancellation Policy:

  • Upon confirmation of the application, any cancellation from the applicant must be made in writing at least two (2) weeks before the Training Course Date. 
  • An administration fee of 35% of the Course Fee will be charged for the cancellation

NB: Acceptance into TTI course does not guarantee accreditation.

TTI Training

  • Candidate to attend the 3-day MHFA TTI Course
  • Receive your MHFA TTI Instructor Kit on Day1 (Refer to Training schedule for TTI Course details)

  • During the course, trainee will be assessed by the Master Trainers.  The assessment is based on observation of trainee’s mental health knowledge, communication skills and attitude.
  • The assessment will also take into account the ability of the trainee to present the MHFA-Singapore program accurately and positively.
  • The trainee is required to give a successful presentation on sections of the 12-hour MHFA-Singapore course during the training. The class participants (fellow trainees and guest participants) will provide a group feedback, followed by a private feedback based on the collective inputs of the Master Trainers.
  • Trainee must PASS the assessment set by the Master Trainers of the TTI Course. All decisions of the Master Trainers are final.

NB: Acceptance into TTI course does not guarantee accreditation.
Should you be unsuccessful in becoming an accredited MHFA-S Instructor, there will be†NO refund†of the course fee. You will also not be able to keep the MHFA(S) Instructor Kit.

Upon successful accreditation as MHFA-S Instructor, you are required to sign the instructor’s agreement adhering to the requirements set out by MEC, acknowledge the copyrights of the materials, criteria as MHFA(S) Instructor and standardization of the MHFA-S Program.

MHFA(S) TTI Training Schedule

MHFA TTI Day 1:

  • Review of 12-hour MHFA course and scientific evidence of mental disorders and recommended treatments
  • Module 1: Overview of mental health issues in Singapore, Introduction to MHFA(S), Psychotic Disorders
  • Module 2: Mood disorders
  • Module 3: Anxiety disorders
  • Module 4: Addiction Disorders (& others relevant only to Youth or Older Person Course only)
  • Community resources and referrals for mental health problems
  • How to handling questions and answers pertaining to mental health issues

MHFA TTI Day 2:

  • Background on history and development of MHFA course
  • Ongoing MHFA research
  • Understand rationale behind pre-post course quizzes
  • Understand learning styles and preferences of adult learners: self-assessment as well as application to classroom teaching
  • Teaching skills
  • Facilitating Group activities

MHFA TTI Day 3

  • Presentation of Selected topics from 12-hour MHFA course by trainees (about 1.5 hours of presentation each)
  • Post training evaluation and feedback
  • Giving out of certificates
